Because of the continuos increase in the adoption of Electric Vehicles, certain issues has come to the fore especially with the V2X concept. Apart from adding additional load to the grid, electric vehicles can also act as possible distributed energy resources. There is huge potential with the V2X services because electric vehicles provide flexibility in location and time, as well as bi-directionality of the electricity flow. The V2X services also creates huge opportunities for utilities and power producers including but not limited to load balancing. Because of this additional load that EVs could add to the grid, the concept of smart charging and demand response explains how this impending issue can be curtailed.
Smart Charging is a scheme where charging is controlled by an algorithm to ensure it happens at times that is optable with respect to energy costs grid stability needs to curb carbon dioxide emissions it is also known as demand response.
Now what is demand response?
People use electricity at certain times and atmostly it is at the same times.
On the days when electricity demand is high, extra power plants are needed to meet that demand. Oftentimes these extra power plants are costly to operate and they create more greenhouse gases enhancing climate change.
The challenge lies in meeting peak electricity demand without adding new power plants. Without an additional solution the increase in peak demand is difficult to meet. Reducing congestion will help existing power plants better serve congestion needs by better matching the demands with available supply. There are environmentally friendly alternatives to adding more generation:
1.) Electricity customers can voluntarily trim their electricity use during peak periods or
2.) Choose to use electricity at a less congested time. This is called demand response.
With demand response programs utilities provide incentives to encourage you to reduce your demands during peak periods. Initiating demand response can be manual or fully automated. There are different types:
1.) Manual response
2.) Fully automated response
3.) Self automated response which is also known as something in between the first two.
An open Automated Automated Demand response platform also known as ADR was developed based on feedback from EV customers. Open ADR offers an EV owners a way to reduce electricity demand even if they are not there or thinking about it. With automation you can decide in advance how you want to reduce your electricity demand. Demand response program signals triggers your energy management strategy even with automation you don’t have to doubt at any time. your contribution does not have to be big the key is for everyone to make small contribution which creates a big difference.
ADR increases grid reliability and provides flexibility to enable you to decide when and how often to reduce your demand or your consumption. The customers contribution via ADR helps keep the lights on and in an environmentally friendly way.
ADR proves that using energy wisely is not just about how much energy you use but when you use it.
